Research of the Newest Russian Armored Vehicle with Increased Protection “Typhoon-K”

Abstract

Purpose: to evaluate the design, technical solutions, and protection system of the latest Russian armored vehicle of increased protection, the "Typhoon-K"; to identify foreign components in the "Typhoon-K" layout for inclusion in the list of sanctioned goods and restriction of their export to the Russian Federation by partner countries; to refute the inflated performance characteristics claimed by the Russian side to create the illusion of dominance over similar MRAP-class armored vehicles of NATO member countries.

Method: Theoretical and analytical, formalized and comparative analysis (of qualitative characteristics), patent search.

Findings: The research results allow assessing the potential and level of technological development of the Russian defense-industrial complex in the creation of MRAP-class armored vehicles of increased protection.

Theoretical implications: The evaluation of innovations and "know-how" in the element base and principles of the "Typhoon-K" layout, as well as the results of the patent search, illustrate rational technical solutions for designing protection systems for domestic combat armored vehicles and MRAP-class vehicles.

Practical implications: It allows identifying elements important for intelligence activities, including foreign components, the restriction of supplies of which to the Russian Federation will affect the ability to produce vehicles of this class, and accordingly, on current and future combat operations. It allows identifying the advantages and disadvantages that domestic manufacturers of similar products need to take into account and determine effective ways to neutralize "Typhoon-K" armored vehicles, since more than 260 units have been delivered to the Russian Armed Forces at the moment, and deliveries are ongoing.
