Analysis of the Channel Selection Problem in Heterogeneous Military Data Transmission Systems
Abstract
Purpose. To structure the problem of communication channel selection in heterogeneous military data transmission systems and to determine the requirements for a switching mechanism under conditions of incomplete and distorted channel-state information.
Methodology. The study employs a systems approach, an analysis of the operating conditions of real-time systems, a systematization of factors contributing to channel degradation, and structural-functional and comparative analysis. The information base comprises doctrinal documents, scientific publications, and publicly available materials on the experience of countering the Russian invasion.
Findings. The channel selection problem is decomposed into four interrelated components: comparison of common and channel-specific indicators, assessment of inactive channels, determination of the switching time, and maintenance of decision stability. The study establishes that channel-state data vary in completeness and reliability, while threshold-based switching creates a risk of delayed handover. The gradual development of certain degradation factors enables proactive decision-making but increases the risk of unnecessary handovers. Eight requirements for the channel selection mechanism are formulated.
Theoretical implications. The study refines the formulation of the channel selection problem by decomposing it into interdependent components and accounting for the limited infrastructure support available to a node under the conditions considered.
Practical implications. The findings may be used to develop communication systems for unmanned platforms, observation posts, and other systems operating under electronic warfare conditions.
Limitations and future research. The findings have not been experimentally validated. Future research will focus on developing an integrated assessment, a channel profile, and a prediction of channel suitability.
Article type. Theoretical article.
